The talk show host, 43, spoke with PEOPLE in an exclusive interview about her surprise appearance at Broadway'sSmashand opened up about her summer plans with her 15-year-old sonDavid, whom she shares with ex-fiancé David Otunga. "We just want to be outside, because he's about to be a junior in high school, so he's a basketball kid and a music kid," Hudson tells PEOPLE. "So we love going to concerts and basketball games." "I'm a basketball mom," she admits. "So you're going to see me at a lot of those sports events. And a lot of concerts. Because we love music too. So we're just going to hang out and have a fun summer because we worked really hard throughout this school year." She also starred in the second season of the 2012 TV series that inspired the stage production. PEOPLE was in the audience when Hudson stepped out on stage to celebrate the stars of the show – and even sing a bit of a song her character performed on the series. Earlier this month, Hudson and her son David matched as they both sported Crocsduring a rare public mother-son outingat the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves game. Hudson paired her designer black, rhinestone-covered Crocs with blue jeans, a black shirt and a leather jacket. The teenager wore an all-black outfit with his white and gray Crocs. Back in November, Hudson shared with PEOPLE that her son David pitched in to make some holiday magic on her new Christmas project."[My son] helped name this holiday album,The Gift of Love," Hudson said of her son. "He's a holiday fanatic just like me. He's been very present within this whole thing," the EGOT winner added. "We would sit by the fireplace, watch holiday movies together. He even went 'Mama, this song right here is my favorite song off of the Christmas album.' Giving his two cents. He's encouraging, he helped me learn different notes." When David turned 15 in August 2024, the EGOT winner shared a rare photo of her son onInstagramto commemorate the special day.
