During an appearance at Fan Expo Philadelphia over the weekend, the stars who struck gold with the 1987 action thriller reunited for the second time this year, nearly four decades after the first film was released. Shutterstock In the franchise, Gibson, 69, plays Los Angeles police detective Martin Riggs, who becomes reckless and suicidal following the death of his wife. He's subsequently reassigned and partnered with Roger Murtaugh (Glover), and although he is "too old for this s---," he and Riggs soon become a force to be reckoned with. PEOPLE confirmedin November 2021 that Gibson would sign on to directLethal Weapon 5after directorRichard Donner diedearly that year at the age of 91. At the time, Gibson said Donner had given him his blessing to complete the next film "if I kick the bucket." During an interview withScreenRantat Fan Expo Philadelphia, Gibson gave a positive update on the fifth film in the series. "I sat down with a writer and we did two or three drafts of screenplays and it came out pretty good. In fact, I think it's the best of all of them," Gibson said. "It's a lot of fun and got really emotional. And for some reason, the studios are having a lot of problems. I don't know what the deal is.
