BIBI releases sophomore album 'EVE: ROMANCE' with philosophical edgeNew Foto - BIBI releases sophomore album 'EVE: ROMANCE' with philosophical edge

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean artist BIBI released her highly anticipated sophomore album "EVE: ROMANCE" on Wednesday, delivering a project that blends her signature genre-defying sound with philosophical twists. The singer, songwriter and actor, who moves fluidly between pop, R&B, hip-hop and electronic music, has built a reputation for her bold, unapologetic presence in an industry often defined by careful image management. Her latest album features 14 tracks, including six new songs alongside previously released hits like "Bam Yang Gang" and "Derre." In an interview with The Associated Press, BIBI explained the meaning behind the album's lead single "Apocalypse," which carries a more poetic Korean title meaning "The Apple Tree of the End Times." "I thought, if there was the fruit of knowledge of good and evil at the beginning, then this would be the apple tree at the end of times," BIBI said. "You know that saying — when asked what you'd do if the world ended tomorrow, some say they'd plant an apple tree, others say they'd have an orgy. ... But to me, they felt like the same thing. Both are, in essence, acts of planting seeds." Her interpretation, merging ideas of creation, pleasure, and existential finality, may come across as provocative in a conservative South Korean society where open discussions about sex remain rare and often taboo. "In reality, everything has an end, and what each person chooses to do in that moment is their own," she added. "It can't be labeled as good or bad. After all, isn't the very idea of good and evil ambiguous?" One of Korea's fastest-rising stars with a growing international presence, BIBI reflected on the surprising success of "Bam Yang Gang." The song, which means a chestnut jelly snack in Korean, became a viral sensation in South Korea last year while she was too busy to notice. "I was filming two dramas simultaneously, so I was really busy," she said. "I couldn't really feel it at that time. Actually, I felt it more this year because people introduce me saying, 'Last year was the year of Bam Yang Gang.'" Despite her growing popularity, BIBI aspires to maintain an element of "ambiguity" in her artistry. "I want to be a mysterious artist. Like 'Gacha!' — that kind of feeling. Like you don't know what you'll get from a Gacha machine," she explained, referencing the Japanese toy vending machines known for their randomized collectibles. The album includes "Pygma girl," a track that reimagines the Greek myth of Pygmalion by reversing traditional muse-artist dynamics, suggesting the subject is the art itself rather than merely inspiring the creator. "Midnight Cruise," another standout track, was written after she dreamt about her late grandfather before her Coachella performance in 2024. BIBI will kick off her first global tour in Seoul on May 16, before heading to the United States and Canada. She will then continue across Asia, with stops including Hong Kong and cities in Japan. The tour will conclude in Australia and New Zealand this October. "EVE: ROMANCE" is out now.

Cannes Skimps on Movie Marketing Stunts: Hollywood Wonders Where the Hype Went?New Foto - Cannes Skimps on Movie Marketing Stunts: Hollywood Wonders Where the Hype Went?

The French Riveria is notorious for abundance, but this year's Cannes Film Festival seems trés lean when it comes to generating excitement over big movies. The Boulevard de la Croisette is usually drenched in pricey activations around summer blockbusters, prestige indies and everything in between — many playing outside the festival's competition and using the foot traffic of stars, industry insiders, fans and journalists to make an impression. Economic uncertainty across global sectors, however, may be the black fly in the Sancerre. More from Variety Mexican Helmer Alex Kahuam, in Cannes' Fantastic Pavilion With 'The Remedy,' Eyes European Locations for Next Major Project (EXCLUSIVE) This Six-Disc 'Mission: Impossible' Blu-Ray Set Gets Discounted to $37 On Heels of 'Final Reckoning' Release Tom Cruise's Crazy, Death-Defying Stunts Land 5-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation at 'Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning' Premiere "Where is the hype?" one top film executive at a streaming company askedVarietyin passing at the beachside Majestic Hotel. So far, only "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" has ponied up to let the city (and the world) know it's premiering in Cannes (and, more important, opening wide on May 21). The hype scale is smaller for the last chapter of Tom Cruise's spy franchise, however. An installation of asymmetrical, 20-foot screens are playing the movie's trailer in front of the Carlton Hotel. It's a far cry from 2022, when Paramount shelled out for a two-story recreation of an Air Force pilot helmet that showed scenes from that Cruise adventure in its giant visor. On balance, the studio did arrange an orchestra to play the "Mission: Impossible" theme music live at the film's gala premiere this year, a feat that's only been pulled off a handful of times (including a live performance from U2 at the top of the Palais steps in 2007). Movie marketers have long used Cannes as an opportunity to associate their projects with the glamour of the annual event — even if their stunts are loud and elaborate (occasionally bordering on tacky). Memorable moments include Will Smith, Angelina Jolie and Jack Black riding into the Cannes harbor on a giant inflatable shark in 2004 to promote their animated "Shark Tale." And Jerry Seinfeld's infamous zip-lining off the Carlton Hotel in a giant bee costume in 2007 for "Bee Movie." Or the tasteful display of Blake Lively's "The Shallows," a 2016 shark survival thriller, which floated shark fins a la "Jaws" around the actor during a photo call. But no such gimmicks have been found this time around. An international film executive noted that a long dock jutting out from the coast by the Hotel Martinez is sadly vacant this year — one normally taken over with prints, advertising and props from films like Brad Pitt's "Bullet Train" and DreamWorks' "Trolls" in the past. Not one film studio has opened its coffers to buy out the exclusive Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in nearby Antibes, home of many Gatsby-style parties over the years. Some think the austerity is due to economic volatility around the world, as U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs wreak havoc on markets (which also concerns the film business, where Trump has proposed a 100% levy on film tax incentives from foreign governments). OthersVarietyspoke with suggested that marketing dollars are being funneled into more democratized audience platforms like TikTok (that app landed Cruise in person for a fireside chat in Cannes on Tuesday). A film sales agent sees the slim pickings as a missed opportunity, noting that the Monte Carlo Grand Prix is held a stone's throw from the festival. Cannes is the perfect place to remind people that Apple and Warner Bros. have a massive action film coming set around the world of Formula One in June. "Why isn't Brad Pitt's face on a cocktail napkin at my hotel?" they asked. Israel's presence still roils Eurovision a year after major protests over the Gaza warNew Foto - Israel's presence still roils Eurovision a year after major protests over the Gaza war

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Most contestants at theEurovision Song Contestare seeking as much publicity as possible. Israel's Yuval Raphael is keeping a low profile. The 24-year old singer has done few media interviews or appearances during Eurovision week, as Israel's participation in the pan-continental pop music competition draws protestsfor a second year. Raphael is due to perform Thursday in thesecond of two semi-finalsat the contest in the Swiss city of Basel. Oddsmakers suggest Raphael, a survivor of Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023 attack on a music festival in southern Israel, is likely to secure a place in Saturday's final with her anthemic song "New Day Will Rise." Israelhas competed in Eurovision for more than 50 years, and won four times. But last year's event in the Swedish city of Malmo drew large demonstrations calling for Israel to be kicked out of the contest over its conduct of itswar against Hamas in Gaza. The Oct. 7 cross-border attacks by Hamas militants killed 1,200 people. More than 52,800 people in Gaza have been killed in Israel's retaliatory offensive, according to the territory's health ministry. About 200 people, many draped in Palestinian flags, protested in central Basel on Wednesday evening, demanding an end to Israel's military offensive and the country's expulsion from Eurovision. They marched in silence down a street noisy with music and Eurovision revelry. Many noted that Russia wasbanned from Eurovisionafter its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. "It should be a happy occasion that Eurovision is finally in Switzerland, but it's not," said Lea Kobler, from Zurich. "How can we rightfully exclude Russia but we're still welcoming Israel?" Last year, Israeli competitor Eden Golan received boos when she performed live at Eurovision. Raphael told the BBC that she expects the same and has rehearsed with background noise so she won't be distracted. "But we are here to sing and I'm going to sing my heart out for everyone," she said. Anti-Israel protests in Basel have been much smaller than last year in Malmo. Another protest is planned for Saturday in downtown Basel, 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from the contest venue, St. Jakobshalle arena. But concern by some Eurovision participants and broadcasters continues. More than 70 former Eurovision contestants signed a letter calling for Israel to be excluded. Several of the national broadcasters that fund Eurovision, including those of Spain, Ireland and Iceland, have called for a discussion about Israel's participation. Swiss singerNemo, who brought the competition to Switzerland bywinning last year, told HuffPost UK that "Israel's actions are fundamentally at odds with the values that Eurovision claims to uphold — peace, unity, and respect for human rights." At Wednesday's protest, Basel resident Domenica Ott held a hand-made sign saying "Nemo was right." She said the nonbinary singer was "very courageous." "If Russia couldn't participate, why should Israel?" she said. The European Broadcasting Union, which runs Eurovision, pointed out that Israel is represented by its public broadcaster, KAN, not the government. It has called on participants to respect Eurovision's values of "universality, diversity, equality and inclusivity" and its political neutrality. ___ Hilary Fox and Kwiyeon Ha contributed to this story.
