During the conversation, Saldaña opens up about the one thing she's most excited for now that she has taken homethe Academy Award for Best Supporting Actressfor her role inEmilia Pérez. "It's a dream come true and I am just convincing myself that I earned it and I deserved it, and allowing that to just make me feel happy and grateful," Saldaña tells PEOPLE. "I'm sort of waving off that fear that always wants to creep in of what's next." "The moment everything was over, I just really just wanted to go back home and just take my kids to school and be a little more present in their lives because they took this leap of faith with me — my whole family did — and I wanted to catch up on this time," she says. "It's through their eyes that I'm able to understand the impact of being recognized for this [and] what it means for us and for anybody. It's just so great." Saldaña and husbandMarco Peregowed in June 2013. Together, they have welcomed three boys —Zen, 8, and twins Bowie and Cy, 10. The star has previously shared that she tries to keep her kids out of the spotlight. "Marco and I have a great deal of respect for theprivacy of our kids," she told PEOPLE in 2017. "We have to choose for them and part of that is giving them the anonymity that they need." Elsewhere in her conversation with PEOPLE, theAvataractress explains that while her three boys typically "don't care" about her work, theycompared her recent accomplishmentto winning the World Cup. "My work is kind of like their backyard, so they do understand it and ... they care about it and then they don't," she said. "It's only through the eyes, I guess, of friends of theirs then that they'll come home and they'll be like, ... 'That's pretty cool, mom, that you've got this like big thing.' " "They think in soccer language," she continued, adding, "It's very much like, 'It's kind of like the World Cup, Mom. It's like the World Cup of acting.'" Mom won!" she enthusiastically said to her boys, as she held the award up in front of the camera. Saldaña has previously opened up aboutnot raising her boys with gender-specific roles, but "teaching our little boys to honor women and to celebrate women." "We're very hard on our boys the same way we're hard on women. And boys are encouraged to be strong and to suppress their emotions," she explained to PEOPLE in 2023. "And then once you learn to do that so much for so long, you become completely excommunicated from your feelings," she continued.
