Why Dave Franco Found the 'Unhingedness' of His "The Studio" Character Refreshing: 'I'm a Very Boring Person These Days' (Exclusive)

Frazer Harrison/Getty Dave Franco made several hilarious appearances as a party animal version of himself inThe Studio, but he tells PEOPLE that his real life couldn't look more different from that onscreen one "I am a very boring person these days in my personal life. I do not go to Vegas. I barely even drink," he admits The Studio's creator and star Seth Rogen previously told PEOPLE that he wrote the unhinged storyline with Franco specifically in mind Dave Francois more likely to be on the couch watching TV than he is partying all night in Las Vegas, so he really relished in how over the top his storyline was inThe Studio. The 39-year-oldplayed a drugged-up, party animal version of himselfin several episodes of the Apple TV+ series, and he told PEOPLE there was a "niceness in the unhingedness of it all." "I take it to a level where it becomes kind of toxic positivity. But yes, it's very fun to play a part that is very different than who I am," he said atThe StudioFYC event in L.A. on May 21. "I mean, I am a very boring person these days in my personal life. I do not go to Vegas. I barely even drink. I definitely don't do drugs," he added. Apple TV+ Instead, Franco said he and his wifeAlison Brie's "idea of an exciting night these days is staying home and watching a documentary with our two cats." "So it's very fun to play something that's very different than my normal life," he said. There was an added freedom in the fact that he was playing himself, so he could take it as far as he wanted to go. "It's like, the crazier you go, the better. Just poke fun at yourself, be as silly as possible, and there's no wrong answer because it's like, 'Hey, I'm playing me. You can't fault me for what I'm doing in any of these scenes. This is me,' " he explained. Apple TV+ The series was renewed for a second season earlier this month, and Franco has some ideas about where his ridiculous storyline could go next. "I mean, I feel like we can't do the same manic positivity, so maybe I've gone hard the other direction, where I'm now in a deep depression," he offered as an idea. "I don't know. Maybe it would be fun to bring my wife in, who, actually, maybe she outshines me, even more manic, and even more positive, and even more crazy." Seth Rogen, who created the series and starred in it as studio head Matt Remick, previously told PEOPLE that he'd envisioned the crazy party storyline for Franco specifically. "Honestly, there were very few people that could have filled the roles that the people had filled because we really specifically werecatering the stories to certain traitsthat celebrities have," he said. "With Dave, it's like, who do you believe would be in aRon Howardmovie? It's a pretty dramatic movie, who could do that? But also, weknew that he would come backand do this truly ridiculous, stupid thing later in the season."The Studiois now streaming on Apple TV+. Read the original article onPeople
